Did You Know?
Our Lakefront
What
The campaign aims to make walking and cycling more safe and convenient along our lakefront and increasing access to public transit. This includes advocating for prioritizing bike, walk and transit improvements in long-term construction projects – like the reconstruction of North Lake Shore Drive – while calling for less costly enhancements that could be made now to the improve the experience for all trail users.
Why
Chicago’s Lakefront Trail is the busiest trail in the U.S., with peak daily usage reaching 30,000 people at key points. With increasing traffic and public attention on Chicago’s lakefront – particularly during the busy summer months – it’s an ideal time to mobilize trail users to push for bike, ped and transit improvements.
Goals
- Advocate for prioritizing bike, walk and transit improvements in long-term construction projects, like the reconstruction of North Lake Shore Drive, that increase access to the trail and make it safer for all users
- Push for short-term improvements, like adding pavement markings to the trail to separate bikes and pedestrians, and adding a separate trail in the most congested areas (e.g. between Oak Street and Fullerton).
