Although people of color make up about one third of the population, they make up 46.1 percent of pedestrian deaths.

Kids Staying Active this Winter

On this second day day of winter, as we enter the prolonged cold and snowy months, it is great to know that the Walk Across Illinois Afterschool Challenge is keeping more than 650 elementary children in Chicago warm by staying active! By participating in weekly fitness and literacy activities, focused bicycle and pedestrian safety, these schools and community organizations report that using the curriculum has shown great success among students in 2010!

“The children have enjoyed the activities so far. They have asked us when our next lesson plan is going to happen or what our next activity will be on. I've enjoyed using the Afterschool Challenge because it has made it easier to introduce activities to the children and be able to have their cooperation as well as their participation!”
~ One Hope United

My students and I are enjoying the program immensely. The attributes we are studying dovetail nicely with the poems and character traits we studied throughout the year….I have enjoyed getting a workout with the children and watching the children use muscles they are not in the habit of exercising.

“The readings are great source for group discussions. Also, the children love the games.”
