Did You Know?

Half of school children walked or biked to school in 1969, but only 13 percent were doing it in 2009.

Come celebrate the new Stearns Road bike/pedestrian bridge

If you missed last winter’s ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Stearns Road Bridge Corridor in Kane County, here’s another chance to celebrate (PDF).

A special event will take place at the rock that marks the site of the original groundbreaking for the project. Festivities begin at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve.

Walk or cycle three quarters of a mile to the rock for the bridge ceremony and then enjoy a great morning filled with fun and family activities. For more information and to RSVP, contact Sherrie McLaughlin at McLaughlinSherrie@kaneforest.com or 630-444-3064 by Monday, September 12.

Here are more photos of the bridge and a report about the new trails in the Stearns Road bridge corridor.

In other Kane County news, the Kane County Division of Transportation just issued an updated version of the Kane and Northern Kendall Public Bike Map, which includes new trails built within the last year, such as three miles of new multi-use paths constructed throughout the Stearns Road Bridge Corridor.
