Although people of color make up about one third of the population, they make up 46.1 percent of pedestrian deaths.

35th Ward Student Active Transportation Plan moves forward

Active Trans works on many different levels to make our streets safer, easier and more convenient for walking and biking to school.

src=http://www.activetrans.org/sites/default/files/kidsls.jpgLast summer, in a partnership with Safe Kids and Sam Schwartz Engineering, Active Trans started looking at ways to improve walking and biking to school in Chicago's 35th Ward, which includes Logan Square.

Last week, residents of the ward–including many families–gathered to learn more about the plan.

Representatives from Sam Schwartz Engineering gave a presentation on issues identified at a previous community meeting and research completed so far. Also at the meeting, participants voted on which places in the ward were most in need of bike and pedestrian safety improvements.

All this work will result in a 35th Ward Student Active Transportation Plan, which will be available this spring. It will contain recommendations for which intersections and routes are most in need of improvement, and what can be done to make those places more walk- and bike-friendly.
