With a May 31 deadline looming, leaders in Springfield are working down to the wire to address the region’s transit funding and operations crisis.
If new funding is not approved by the end of the legislative session, transit agencies will be forced to begin to plan for devastating cuts in bus and train service.
After years of degrading service and conditions, elected leaders and riders have demanded reforms to improve the safety, reliability, and quality of transit that would be put in place alongside any additional revenue.
Legislation has been introduced to both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly that address these needs, but we urge all of our leaders to continue to work until a package is passed that includes both reform and funding.
Over the coming hours, both the state house and senate will be amending legislation and moving through procedures towards passage. This is a critical time to keep up the drum beat of support for revenue and reform.
Thank you for taking action during this gravely important moment for our transit system.
