People walking are five times as likely to be killed by a driver traveling 30 mph as one going 20 mph.

Legislative Udate

Yesterday, the Vehicle and Safety Committee of the Illinois House of Representatives passed two Active Trans bills on unanimous votes.

The Pedestrian Safety Bill (sponsored by Rep. Arroyo) would require drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks (rather than yield).

The School Safety Bill (sponsored by Rep. Pritchard) would give school districts greater flexibility in how they use fine monies received from speeding violations in school zones. The school districts would be allowed to use the funds for Safe Routes to School purposes.

The Committee also voted for a ban on cell phone use in school & construction zones, and a ban on text messaging while driving.

Many thanks to AARP, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, School Management Alliance (the school boards, administrators and principals), Healthy Schools Campaign, League of Illinois Bicyclists and Cook County State's Attorney for their support.
