Bicycling and the U. S. Current Account Balance
Consider the bicyle and world trade:
An economically minded cyclist mediates on the relationship between current account balance and transportation modeshare. He concludes that countries with a current account deficit (countries that buy more from the rest of the world than they sell to it) are less like to bicycle than those with a current account surplus (countries that sell more to the rest of the world than they buy from it). It's common sense that the countries that spend more in general, will also spend more on getting around by having inefficient and costly transportation. But high aggregate demand (and a nice quality of life) does not have to mean high cost transportation.
The Active Transportation Alliance helps achieve a healthy current account balance of zero by encouraging low cost, high-class transportation. Your membership in the Active Transportation Alliance reroutes America away from a path of economic dysfunction via a pathway of responsible mobility. If you are not an Active Trans member already, I invite you to join the 6,000 members in Chicagoland who are making inroads into our transportation culture. Ask a friend to join if you are already a member; in our metropolitan area of 8 million we have a lot of room for membership growth.
