Walking to work can provide you with a host of benefits. It allows you to get to know your neighborhood, it can improve your health and it makes the environment cleaner by taking cars off the road. Also, physical exercise and getting outdoors both provide great ways to de-stress before and after a day of work.
If you’ve been meaning to get started with a two-footed commute, now you have the perfect opportunity. The first Friday of April is Walk to Work Day (and, yes, it's April Fools Day, too). It's a day when people all over the nation will be lacing up their walking shoes as they get ready for work in the morning.
Here are a few tips that can help with your bipedal commute:
- What equipment do I need? Very little: Wear comfortable shoes, loose pants and be ready to shed layers once you get warm.
- What if my commute is too long to walk? Take transit or drive for part of the way and then walk the rest of the way.
- How can I get motivated? Get a group of co-workers together and meet up on the way to work as a walking group.
- What if I don’t have time before or after work? If you’re not able to walk during your commute, grab a group of co-workers and walk somewhere for lunch.
