Did You Know?

Chicago’s first protected bike lane on Kinzie St. increased ridership by 55 percent without increasing traffic congestion for cars.

Create your healthy transportation legacy

We know you want to see a more livable region with better transportation.

That’s why you like to get around by riding a bike, walking and using public transportation in your community. That’s also why you support Active Trans and work side-by-side with us for cleaner, healthier transportation choices.

Another way you can help Active Trans is by creating your own legacy of healthy transportation.

Including Active Trans in your estate planning is a practical and powerful way to create a transportation legacy. Planned gifts can also carry tax benefits, allowing you to meet your financial goals while advancing the work of Active Trans into the future.

Below are some common types of legacy gifts:

Bequests and Beneficiary Designations

Including a charity as a beneficiary in a will or trust is a very common form of planned giving. You can also choose to name Active Trans as a beneficiary in your retirement plan or insurance policy. A designation can be made to donate either a certain amount or a percentage of the assets to Active Trans.

To make a gift in your will, trust, retirement plan or life insurance policy, please use the following sample text:

“I give and devise to The Active Transportation Alliance (EIN 36-3385886), currently headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, and serving Chicago and its suburbs, (the sum of $X/X shares of ABC stock/X% of the residue of my estate) to be used for its general purposes and without restrictions.”

Life Income Gifts

Other types of planned gifts can be set up to provide a stream of income for you or Active Trans during your lifetime. With a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, a donor can make an irrevocable contribution of assets to fund the trust or annuity, which then provides an income stream for the donor for a designated period of time. When the term ends, the balance goes to the designated charity.

Charitable Lead Trusts, on the other hand, provide an income stream for the designated charity with the balance returning to the donor or his/her heirs.

If Active Trans is already included in your plans, please let us know by emailing us at legacy@activetrans.org so we can thank you and make sure we can correctly reflect your wishes for your transportation legacy.
