Did You Know?

Chicago’s first protected bike lane on Kinzie St. increased ridership by 55 percent without increasing traffic congestion for cars.

Traffic Safety in the News

There were quite a few stories recently about enforcement of traffic safety laws.

The Chicago Tribune reported that revenues from red light camera violations are on the decrease.

And crashes appear to decrease in intersections with red light cameras.

Meanwhile, several suburbs seem to have stepped up enforcement of speeding laws.

And the Illinois State Police is agressively enforcing the new distracted driving laws.

So, what do these articles tell us? Chicago-area municipalities are aggressively enforcing traffic safety laws. They are using innovative tactics (e.g. red light cameras, and emphasizing stops for equipment violations). There is evidence for traffic safety benefits of these strategies. And there is conflicting evidence on whether communities are reaping extra revenue from these efforts.

So, what is Active Transportation Alliance doing to make the roads safer? Stay turned for an aggressive new legislative agenda for 2011 (will be released in January).
