Nearly five children are hit by people driving every day in Illinois while walking or biking within one block of a school.

New Year New Laws

Welcome to 2011! With the new year comes several new laws. Here are a few of the new laws (effective January 1, 2011) that make Illinois a safer, healthier place to bike, walk and use transit. Active Transportation Alliance is proud to have played a leading role in getting these bills enacted.

Red Light Camera Reforms (Public Act 96-1016) ensures that all municipalities in Chicago area have access to the safety-enhanching red light cameras.

Bicycle Safety Law (Public Act 96-1007) creates a new crime for motorists who drive to close to, toward or near bicyclists.

Roadside Memorial Act (Public Act 96-1371) provides family members of bicyclists or pedestrians killed in road crashes the right to have a memorial erected at the scene of the crash.

In a few weeks, Active Transportation Alliance will be announcing our ambitious legislative agenda for 2011. Be sure to read Traffic Signals and check out www.activetrans.org.

Happy New Year!
