Federal Funding for Active Transportation

The Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality (CMAQ) program is one of the most important funding sources for bicycle, pedestrian and transit projects. Locally, CMAQ funds are distributed by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. This last weekend, the public comment period ended for the proposed CMAQ program for the next five years.

In that program, there are many excellent projects including some long-term priorities of Active Transportation Alliance. These include the Navy Pier Flyover, Calumet-Sag Trail and a bike sharing program for Chicago. Active Trans is gratified to see this support for active transportation in the region.

Unfortunately, the riches weren't distributed equally. Many worthy projects in the suburbs were not awarded funds. Active Transportation Alliance submitted comments to CMAP asking for re-consideration of these projects. See the attached letter. The CMAQ Project Selection Committee will be meeting on September 15, 2011 to recommend a final list of projects for funding.
