Did You Know?

A bicycle commuter who rides four miles to work, five days a week, avoids 2,000 miles of driving and about 2,000 pounds of CO2 emissions each year.

Congrats to Active Trans' Steve Buchtel!

Yesterday at the National Trails Symposium, Active Trans' own Steve Buchtel was honored as Illinois Trail Worker of the year. Congratulations Steve! The National Trails Awards recognize individuals and organizations who are working to create a national system of trails to meet the recreation, health and travel needs of all Americans.

For more than a decade, Steve has been the voice of trail users in the Chicago region and especially his backyard, the Southland.

Just weeks ago, Steve's pet project the Calumet-Sag Trail received $2.8 million in Transportation Enhancements funding. Adjacent to 26 miles of waterway, this trail will provide recreation and travel options to 185,000 people in 14 communities.

All of us at Active Trans know about the benefits of trails. That's why we are so excited about the $49 million in funding for bicycling projects through Transportation Enhancements this year. That's why we are working on urban and suburban trails throughout Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

And that's why we are lucky to employ the Illinois Trail Worker of the Year.
