Recognizing the people working for healthier, more equitable transportation

This year, Active Trans is celebrating 35 years of advocating for better transportation options in the region.

To commemorate this milestone, we recently gathered virtually with fellow supporters to socialize, have some fun, and look back at the important work accomplished over the years.

The main focus of the event, however, was recognizing local individuals who are dedicated to making our region and our world better places for walking, biking, and public transportation.

A local champion for transportation justice

Active Trans is thrilled to be recognizing US Representative Jesús García for our 35th Anniversary celebration.

Known to most people as “Chuy,” Rep. García is receiving Active Trans’ Public Leadership Award for his tireless efforts fighting for better public transportation, walking, and biking.

Having served as a Chicago alderman, a Cook County Board member, and a state senator, he now represents Illinois’ fourth district for the US House of Representatives,

Free masks piloted on 20 CTA bus routes

The Chicago Transit Authority took an important step forward in keeping riders safe and healthy by starting to offer free, disposable face masks on approximately 200 buses serving 20 bus routes.

Kudos to the CTA for making the move, which began at the end of 2020. Making masks readily available on all buses and trains is the best way to ensure universal mask compliance.

Active Trans first called for CTA to provide free masks to all riders who need one in July.

Three inspiring local advocates receive awards from Active Trans

The recent Active Trans Annual Meeting provided an opportunity for supporters of the organization to give a round of applause for our talented local advocates. Below you can see brief recorded remarks from our advocacy award recipients: Romina Castillo, Pha’Tal Perkins, and Wharton Sinkler.

People who attended the event also got an overview of the key advocacy efforts Active Trans has been pursuing in the region in response to the challenges of the past year.
