North Suburbs Advocacy

Hello everyone! This is Lina Hoffman sharing some updates on North Suburban advocacy. As the North Suburban Coordinator, I am very excited to promote walking, biking, and transit in the North Suburbs.

On Wed., March 18 I attended an Evanston Bike Club meeting along with Active Trans Executive Director Rob Sadowsky, Marketing Director Ethan Spotts, and about 40 members of the Evanston club. Rob and Ethan described the new expanded mission of Active Transportation Alliance and highlighted several legislative initiatives and projects that aim to improve the environment for bikers, walkers, and public transit users. Evanston club members asked many great questions and were particularly interested in Lake County’s Complete Streets Initiative.

The Evanston meeting atmosphere was very festive in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, with attendees both wearing green and supporting green! Meeting attendees enjoyed food and drink, and heard from Isaac Lund who recently completed the LOTOJA 200 mile bike race from Utah to Wyoming…way to go!

This week I am looking forward to meeting with members of the Northwest Municipal Conference (NWMC) Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force, comprised of planners and engineers from member municipalities across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties. I am looking forward to meeting with this team and learning how we can work together to improve bike/ped issues in the North Shore.

As I mentioned in my last blog, I am also looking forward meeting more North Suburban cyclists at an upcoming member event on Thursday, April 16 at 7pm. Here are the details:

Robbie Ventura, Tour de France commentator and Active Trans member will be chatting and sharing his behind the scenes racing stories at his Trek store in Highland Park at 1925 Skokie Valley in Highland Park. Active Trans members get in for free! Not a member? Become one at the door for $25. Enjoy some light drinks and snacks, auctions and raffles. Don’t forget to peruse the goods-members get discounts on merchandise at the event. Become part of the movement that is working to get half the population to walk, bike or use mass transit!
