Homewood bike network rolls forward

The Village of Homewood has installed bikeways throughout the community. Funded by a Congestion, Mitigation, and Air Quality grant, Homewood is the first south suburban community to commission a comprehensive bikeway system and enact the first phase. Phase 1 includes shared road markings, bike lanes, signage and bike racks.

The plan, completed in 2007, began with painting bike lanes and sharrows on streets commonly used by cyclists, including Ridge Road, Dixie Highway, Harwood Avenue and Ashland Avenue. Destination and route signs were installed throughout Homewood’s bike system. Fifty new bike racks were installed at schools, parks and shopping areas.

Homewood is creating a committee to provide educational resources to cyclists and drivers on using this new infrastructure. As a Homewood resident, I have seen many more cyclists this summer than ever before. All of this bicycle infrastructure is getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes.
