It’s Chicago Bike Week: With unprecedented demand at local bike shops, bike advocates focus on education during the week
CHICAGO, June 29, 2020 — Chicagoland bike shops are reporting bikes being sold out and lots of new riders hoping on bikes. To make sure these new cyclists keep rolling during and after the pandemic, Active Transportation Alliance is concentrating on three key themes for Chicago Bike Week.
The campaign, which rolls out on social media and through the Active Trans website during the week, will focus on sharing knowledge, the joy of biking, and the health and environmental benefits of choosing two wheels over four!
What: Chicago Bike Week, presented by Freeman Kevenides Law Firm
When: Monday June 29 – Friday July 3
Where: https://activetrans.org/dev/bikeweek
Over the course of the week, those who tune in will get tips on how not to get your bike stolen, pointers on basic bike maintenance, and a live Zoom chat with attorney Brendan Kevenides, who will share bike law basics in Illinois.
Active Trans also has content planned for more experienced riders who may be looking for new ways to have fun on two wheels. The annual Bike Challenge will return this year on July 6 with local workplaces competing to see who can bike the most miles. But with many people working from home this year, Active Trans has expanded the challenge to include any trip taken by bike – so trips to the store or park will now allow you to rack up points!
“We’re thrilled to be presenting Chicago Bike Week, and want to serve as a resource for new and experienced riders alike,” said Amy Rynell, the Executive Director of Active Transportation Alliance. “Cycling is a healthy way to travel and commute, and it’s a good type of physical activity when you’re trying to maintain physical distance from others.”
For more than 30 years, Active Trans has been dedicated to creating healthy, safe, and equitable options for getting around Chicagoland. During Chicago Bike Week, Active Trans will also be highlighting the role bikes play in creating a better world. Over the past few months, we’ve been reminded again and again how the issues of biking and mobility intersect with broader movements for social justice. Over the course of the week, Active Trans will also share actions people can take to help move this crucial work forward.
