Did You Know?

Half of school children walked or biked to school in 1969, but only 13 percent were doing it in 2009.

Transit-Oriented Pop Culture

This morning on my CTA commute I got the warm and fuzzies when I opened the Red Eye to a special New Year's feature. Stick close to the 'L' for a low-stress night it proclaimed, with CTA line color-themed boxes highlighting bars located conveniently close to CTA stations on each train line.

These may not be my kind of bars, but that's not the point. It's great to see a pop culture free daily like the Red Eye give transit a big hug like that. I further appreciated that it assumed the idea of driving to the bars on New Year's wouldn't cross your mind — it sold transit as an alternative to taking a cab.

I love seeing the mainstream buy into the idea of orienting your activities around transit and walking, and I love even more that this has become commonplace in Chicago.
