Only 0.7 percent of federal transportation funds are spent on improving pedestrian facilities.

Legal Protection for Active Transportation Users

Today, the Illinois Senate unanimously passed HB 2245. This bill, championed by Attorney General Lisa Madigan and House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), will re-defines crime of violence as including leaving the scene of a crash involving the death or personal injury of a bicyclist of pedestrian victim.

This bill will provide the victims of such crimes, or their estates, with access to the Illinois Court of Claims for compensation of their injuries.

The bill previously passed the Illinois House and now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature.

Illinois has more than 6,000 crashes a year where motor vehicles hit pedestrians. HB 43, still pending in the Illinois Senate, will help reduce the pedestrian safety problem and hopefully make HB 2245 unnecessary. Please call your Senator and ask the Senator to vote for HB 43.
