Elmhurst, where bicycles are more common than horses
The most recent issue of the weekly newspaper, the Elmhurst Independent, took a look back to 1895. In between notices for a cord of firewood for $4 (delivered!) and an account of local farmers who are eager to start working their fields, there is this brief mention baseball and bicycling.
April 7, 1895: What to do after church on Sunday? Well, 'Sunday games of base ball are fashionable'… Or how about a bike ride? 'Bicycles are all the rage here, they being far more numerous than horses.
