Half of school children walked or biked to school in 1969, but only 13 percent were doing it in 2009.

Elmhurst saves big on bike plan

Elmhurst Bicycle Task Force leader and Active Trans board member Bob Hoel is saving Elmhurst up to $30,000 by engaging a student, in lieu of a consulting firm, to prepare a bicycle plan for the city.

J/im Mitchell, a full-time employee of a consulting company, is also a graduate student working on his MA in urban planning at the University of Illinois. As his master’s thesis, Mitchell will develop a 40 to 50 page document setting forth a one-year, three-year, and five-year plan to make Elmhurst more bicycle friendly.

Hoel will encourage Elmhurst to adopt the finished product as an amendment to the city’s comprehensive plan. Sounds like a win-win proposition for all concerned! Read more about this in an article that appeared in the Elmhurst Independent.
