Distracted driving takes another life

On March 7, 2011, two cyclists, husband and wife, were struck by a distracted driver while riding their tandem bicycle near Champaign, IL. The crash left one of the cyclists dead and the other in critical, but stable, condition.

The driver admitted that he was reading a plat book (a book of land maps) when he hit the cyclists. This incident is yet another reminder of how deadly distracted driving is.

Active Trans has played an important role in getting state and local laws passed that protect the most vulnerable users of the road. It is now up to law enforcement, legal professionals and elected officials to enforce these laws and send a message that distracted driving is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

We are currently in contact with our fellow advocates and partners in Central Illinois and will report any new developments about this case as they come in.
