CPS Students Celebrate Active Transportation at Fun & Fit Celebration

To celebrate the end of their 20 weeks using the Walk Across Illinois Afterschool Challenge, Christopher Elementary school, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, brought together students and teachers on Wednesday, March 16th to celebrate ways to be fit, stay healthy and maintain an active lifestyle.

As a part of their After School All Stars program, the culminating Fun & Fit Celebration gave 20 fourth grade students the opportunity to create nutritious snacks by making fruit kabobs to serve to more than 85 children and teachers at the school. When asked about the Walk Across Illinois Afterschool Challenge program, one 4th grade student said that he liked the program because, We learn how to wear helmets and how to stay safe.

With the support of the wonderful teachers and administration at Christopher Elementary, the Walk Across Illinois Afterschool Challenge was a great success.  Assistant Principal Barb Freely expressed her gratitude to the Active Transportation Alliance education staff by saying “Here at Christopher School we sincerely enjoyed our association with Walk Across Illinois for our After School All Stars Program. We hope to use the program again next year. Thanks so much for all of your support!”

It is great to see how children are learning the benefits of bicycle safety, physical activity, and healthful eating by participating in the Active Transportation Alliance education programs.
