Block 37 Update

A quick lesson on Block 37.

The block bordered by Washington, Randolph, State and Dearborn streets in Chicago could only be described as star-crossed. Twenty years ago, the buildings on this block were cleared for a major re-development effort. Twenty years and several development schemes later, the complex is still not open. It was supposed to open by Thanksgiving. But a new legal dispute between the building developer and Bank of America, the primary funder, is holding up the opening day.

Why do we care?

Beneath, Block 37 is a busy portion of the Chicago Pedway System. For more than a decade parts of the pedway have been under construction with the full pedway almost never open to the public. As Crain's Chicago Business today reported, the legal dispute may hold up the re-opening of the pedway.
