Did You Know?

Half of school children walked or biked to school in 1969, but only 13 percent were doing it in 2009.

Better Blocks at Nobel School

Good things are happening at Alfred Nobel Elementary School in Logan Square. A whopping 26 moms and dads, mostly Spanish speaking, were on hand for a recent Better Blocks presentation provided by Active Trans.

Better Blocks, as you might already know, is an Active Trans program that helps residents in underserved neighborhoods pursue changes that will make streets—block-by-block—more inviting for walking and cycling.

The parents at Nobel School were engaged and enthusiastic about making changes to the local built environment. They identified many concerns and interests—from gang issues in alleyways to painting ladder style crosswalks at Karlov and Kamerling.

In coming weeks, Active Trans will present the group with recommendations and a plan of action. And congratulations to Carmen Rivas for winning the bike raffle!
