Lakefront Trail

North Side Lakefront Trail detour starts Monday

To make way for trail separation, the park district plans to close the Lakefront Trail between Diversey and North Avenue and redirect users to a marked detour through Lincoln Park.

Making one of the city’s crown jewels safer for everyone

Saturday’s groundbreaking on the Lakefront Trail was a great moment for everyone who enjoys one of Chicago’s most beloved — but extremely congested — public spaces.

For Saturday’s event, I joined Mayor Rahm Emanuel, local philanthropist Ken Griffin, Chicago Park District Superintendent Michael Kelly, Alderman Michelle Smith and others to mark the beginning of a project that will create separate trail spaces for people biking and walking on the Lakefront Trail between North Avenue and Fullerton (see photo).

Navy Pier Flyover on track to be complete in 2018

The lengthy construction process for the Navy Pier Flyover has been frustrating for many Lakefront Trail users, but the city says it will be finished next year.

The flyover, which will allow people biking and walking on the trail to bypass congested vehicle traffic around Navy Pier, is one of the highest profile active transportation projects in the region. We get questions about the status often, especially as temperatures warm up and more people use the trail.

Park district moves on Lakefront Trail separation

With Ken Griffin’s $12 million donation secured, the Chicago Park District plans to create separated trail space for people biking and people walking between West Fullerton Street and East Ohio Street this spring.

The North Side segment is part of a larger project to create separate paths along the full length of the 18-mile Lakefront Trail by the end of 2018, as Mayor Emanuel announced last December.

Private donation will accelerate full Lakefront Trail separation

Megan Williams, who was seriously injured in a Lakefront Trail crash, called it the best Christmas present she could hope for when Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago Park District announced hedge fund manager Ken Griffin donated $12 million to the city to create separated paths for people biking and people on foot along the full length of Chicago’s Lakefront Trail.
