Bike Week grants inspire events around the city

Active Trans was thrilled to be able to offer financial support to bring Bike Week into additional communities throughout Chicago this year. 

Thanks to financial support from Google, Active Trans provided four grants to community groups so that they could host Bike Week encouragement and educational events.

Our Bus Advocacy Grants are being put to work!

In 2017, Active Trans and our partners from the Back on the Bus Coalition published the Back on the Bus report. This report found that bus ridership in the city was dropping and that the way to increase bus ridership was to focus on improving bus speed and reliability. 

To reverse this trend, three recommendations were given:

Ride sparks discussion with 31st Ward alderman

Belmont Cragin residents are eager to see better biking infrastructure in their neighborhood. This desire was clearly on display on a recent weekend when 80 people came out to the Bike 4 Belmont Cragin ride organized by the Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) and Active Trans.

Sign the petition for a Chicago Bike Walk Fund

After a flurry of new construction from 2011 to 2015, the growth of Chicago’s networks of protected bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly streets has unfortunately slowed down.

Chicago installed 15.9 miles of new bikeways (including one mile of protected bike lanes) in 2017, down from a peak of 39.5 new miles of bikeways in 2014.

Progress on safer streets is clearly lagging despite growing support among Chicagoans and our elected officials for creating streets that protect the most vulnerable users on foot and bike. 

Elon Musk is not Chicago’s transit savior

Before city leaders go any further in negotiations with Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build and operate express transit service from O’Hare to downtown, they should revisit who the project benefits and if the public-private partnership will slow progress on the region’s more pressing transit needs.

UIC public health students advance Weber Spur Trail

Because urban trails encourage more people to bike, walk and run, they happen to be one of the best tools we have to improve public health.

This desire to help people improve their health is in part what fuels our work to advance a continuous Chicago River Trail.

Take our survey to improve walking & biking on Logan Blvd.

Did you know that 17 of the Chicago River's 27 miles will have trails by the end of 2018? 

With trails taking shape as quickly as they are, it's urgent we push for improvements that create safe walking and biking options for accessing the river.

One area where we're working on better access to the Chicago River Trail is on Logan Blvd. from Rockwell Ave. to Lathrop Homes.

If you've ever biked or walked along this stretch, you know how perilous it can be for people walking and biking.
